The Strawberry Letter: He Risked It All for One More Night With Her

Dear Steve and Shirley,

I'm dating a man who was married when I met him. He was going through a difficult divorce, and I allowed him to vent and even cry sometimes because he was really struggling. I loved how he never said anything negative about his ex-wife, which made me think she had to be an evil person because of how bad the divorce was.

I finally spoke to her for the first time, and she's far from evil. But first, let me tell you what happened two weekends ago. I went to Dallas for the day and drove back home that same night. My boyfriend said he was out watching the game and sent me a text that said he wanted to see me before I left, and another one that said, "please, please, please." By then, I was already home, so I texted him back, telling him I was in bed and asked him to come over. He didn’t respond.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought those texts weren’t meant for me. Supposedly, he was trying to text his ex-wife, not me.

Fast forward to yesterday, when his ex-wife called me. She said she got my number from my boyfriend's phone. She was very pleasant and complimentary and even said she follows me on Instagram. She told me she got married two weeks ago in Virginia, and that my boyfriend had called her countless times before she left town for her wedding. She said he begged her to make love to him one more time and sent me their text thread to prove it. His messages said he’d "risk it all just to have one more night with her."

She told me they did have sex that night and felt I should know. I can only assume he’s still in love with her. My boyfriend denied everything, including the texts. For the first time ever, he said he hates her.

Should I believe his ex or not?
