NFL Coach's Future With Team Compared To 'The Titanic'

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson's current job status was compared to "the Titanic" as his expected firing seems inevitable, an anonymous source told ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler this week.

"One source classified any potential firings as 'deck chairs on the Titanic,'" Fowler wrote in the co-authored ESPN+ column. "In other words, no Week 12 tweak would be able to stop what seems like an inevitability: an overhaul in the offseason. But they were definitely bracing for some sort of change, which never came."

The Jaguars are currently 2-9, the worst record in the NFL, and lost, 52-6, to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, their worst loss in franchise history. Pederson said, "if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen," when asked by reporters about potentially being fired and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio claimed "it could happen soon" during the NBC live broadcast of Football Night in America Sunday (November 17) night.

Florio also claimed there is "belief" that six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick would potentially accept the Jaguars' head coaching role if it becomes available.

Florio specified that general manager Trent Baalke "could potentially survive in the next year as part of a package deal" with Belichick, who he worked with on the New York Jets' staff in 1998 and 1999.

"That coach is available, he's won a few Super Bowls, his name is Bill Belichick," Florio said.

Pederson has gone 45-20 during three seasons as the Jaguars' head coach, which included winning one playoff game during his first season and likely missing the postseason for the second consecutive year.
