Watch Robert Trujillo Flawlessly Play Cliff Burton's "Anesthesia" Bass Solo

Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo's latest solo spot in concert went a lot better than the last one we wrote about

At a recent 'Tallica show in Austin, Trujillo performed a near note-perfect rendition of early-Metallica bassist Cliff Burton's famous solo, "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth," from the band's debut album.

"Mr. Robert Trujillo, and the spirit of Mr. Clifford Lee Burton!" exclaimed front man James Hetfield as the bassist's last note rang out.

Beyond having been included on Metallica's first studio album, Kill 'Em All, the "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth" bass solo has a special place in Metallica history.

Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich first took notice of Burton while the bassist was on stage with his pre-Metallica band Trauma in the early-'80s. The Metallica co-founders have well-documented their astonishment watching Burton solo for the first time.

Metallica's first bassist Ron McGovney remembers it too. He was still in Metallica at the time, but he wasn't long for the band. He recalled a sense of relief, knowing that the band finally found the right bassist.

"I thought he was awesome, too," McGovney clarified in an interview this past July with Talk Is Jericho. "He's doing stuff [on the bass] that I could never do."

It wasn't long before Burton joined Metallica. And the rest is history.

Metallica often pays homage to Burton during its live shows. This past February, the band celebrated Cliff Burton Day, by performing another signature Burton track, "Orion."
