Kelly Clarkson is making the rounds to promote her new album, Meaning of Life, and made a juicy confession during a recent radio stop, admitting that she had a difficult time fitting in with some of the early 2000s pop stars during her debut years, particularly Avril Lavigne.
For some time now, the original American Idol champ has alluded to some not-so-friendly encounters with fellow pop peers and the chart-topper finally spilled the beans on a specific incident, which may or may not have been during the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards when Clarkson handed Avril Lavigne the Moonman and the starlet appeared to push her out of the way.
"I got elbowed in the face by someone I was giving an award to at the VMAs," she revealed during the interview. Pressed to reveal the identity of the star, Kelly admitted that it was Avril Lavigne. "It was her, but I will say this: Years later I saw her and she said, 'Oh my gosh, people keep saying I elbowed you in the face and I’m so sorry!' And I don't know... she did it... but I don't know if she felt bad about it, or she didn't mean to do it, or what... but it felt purposeful! I think what I was bummed about is I'm a fan of hers. I loved her music."
Coincidentally, Lavigne co-wrote "Breakaway," one of Clarkson's very first hits, which appeared The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement: Original Soundtrack as well as her blockbuster LP, Breakaway.
