Jharrel Jerome may be new to Hollywood, but his star is quickly rising.
The When They See Us actor tearily made history as the first Afro-Latino and the youngest person to take home the title of "Outstanding Lead Actor." CNN reported he hopes it's a "step forward for Dominicans, for Latinos, for Afro-Latinos. It's about time we are here." He scored big with is portrayal of Korey Wise, the oldest of the Exonerated 5 who served 14 years in prison.
It was a magical day for the budding actor, who was sure to thank the great people behind him. After showing love to his family, including mother who sat proudly and was just as choked-up as Jharrel, he shined a light on the woman who made it all possible: Ava DuVernay. However, it was his acknowledgement to the Exonerated 5 that brought it all home.
Wise, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson and Yusef Salaam stood in support of Jerome after he dedicated his award to them. It was a beautifully well-deserved moment that will stick anyone lucky enough to witness it.
