Motown is ringing in the rest of their 60th anniversary with the release of remastered classic albums.
A total of five albums have been selected to go through a dramatic makeover. The record company is taking The Four Topsโ Reach Out, The Marvelettesโ Sophisticated Soul, The Miraclesโ Youโve Really Got A Hold On Me, Diana Ross & The Supremesโ Reflections and The Temptationsโ The Temptations Sing Smokey from their original analog tapes to pressed audiophile-quality vinyl packaged in deluxe Stoughton tip-on jackets.
Remastering engineer Kevin Gray reminded us that tapes were the thing back in the day because the music was "intended for radio." He went on to explain according to The Music Universe:
โIโm approaching these Motown albums by trying to keep everything balanced within the same framework. Within an album, I try to find a level that is representative of what the album was supposed to be, and then I match everything as closely as I can to that with EQ. I certainly donโt find any need to add further compression. The tapes have held up well. Iโm always pleased when that happens. Itโs been very rewarding to work on them, and they sounded very, very good.โ
The projects are scheduled to be unveiled November 8th through Motown/UME.
