A hurricane wasn't enough to hold an organization of ladies back. In fact, it brought them closer.
The ladies of DeltaDelta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. reunited in New Orleans for what was supposed to be an exciting gathering. Their 54th National Convention finally arrived, but so did Hurricane Barry. The decision to cancel the gathering was an option, but not one of these fearless women acknowledged it.
Delta President Beverly Smith told Because of Them We Can:
“While we had to make a quick decision on closing a convention that was going well, I know it was the right thing to do for the welfare of our members and guests. We were able to adjust our agenda and get the business of Delta done in spite of the storm."
The need to help those suffering in the natural disaster came before rescuing themselves. Improvisation came in handy when it came down to making sure their catered food from Centerplate didn't go to waste. Second Harvest Food Bank inherited the meals and saved them in order to give away to those in need in the community after the devastating storm passed.
“As a service-based organization, I am glad the food we purchased to handle our 17,000 attendees won’t go to waste. I am delighted that Centerplate will be able get those meals to others in need. If we can help serve someone with meals as they go through their personal storms, then our work and purpose is still being fulfilled.”
It proved to be a simple decision for the group who's dedicated themselves to scholarship, public service, and sisterhood since 1913.
